On the 12th October 1862, Theodor Boveri (1862-1915) was born.  The German zoologist was one of the founders of modern cytology and through his work with nematode eggs, he was able to prove that chromosomes are separate and continuous entities within a cell nucleus.  In 1902 he proposed that cancers begin when the chromosomes of a single cell become scrambled, causing uncontrolled division.
